Ian Poulter’s win in the final of the Accenture Matchplay Championships against fellow countryman Paul Casey was significant because it was Poulter’s first win on the US PGA Tour.

However, the all-England final was also significant because it demonstrated the growing strength of English golf at the elite level. Just look at the numbers- A decade ago, there were only 2 Englishmen in the Top 100 in the World Golf Rankings. Today, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Paul Casey form numbers 4, 5 and 6 in the World Golf Rankings respectively.

In Poulter’s own words, this English surge “has been a long time coming”.
